The Role

We are looking for an experienced Technical Director (Civils) to join our growing engineering team in Birmingham.

You will provide national technical leadership within a specialist area within the SYSTRA Engineering Division. You will be expected to develop engineering services to deliver and improve technical excellence in accordance with SYSTRA Engineering aspirations. You will be part of a growing team of UK engineers delivering projects for a diverse portfolio of UK clients.

Duties will include:

  • Technical co-ordination and integration of multi-discipline design inputs through Full project life-cycle through design and implementation to operation
  • Ensuring project requirements are fully met
  • Producing technically sound design solutions, including all associated reporting and cost estimating, to programme and within budget
  • Ensuring constructability, value for money, and innovation are considered at all stages
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant technical standards
  • Management of overall discipline capability in the UK.
  • Ensure that a staff competence assessment has been completed and, where necessary, licenced to undertake the level of engineering required on any individual project
  • Accountable for issuing Authority to Work to discipline staff.
  • Developing the discipline competencies in line with the predicted workload of projects and the future value propositions being evolved
  • Providing technical direction and leadership to deliver planned growth, development, recruitment, training and mentoring of staff
  • Undertake Technical Reviews and Peer Reviews of projects
  • Establishment of internal design standards and/or processes to achieve a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency.
  • Implement effective, value for money and innovative design solutions to meet technical and project requirements
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health, safety and environmental legislation, particularly the CDM Regulations
  • Acting as Technical Director within the Technical Directorate and maintain and support Production Centres in the wider SYSTRA Group,

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Must be accredited as ICE Supervising Civil Engineer or equivalent in other professional institution(s).
  • BSc, BEng, MSc Civil Engineering
  • Professionally Qualified Chartered (CEng) Engineer
  • Understanding of multi-disciplinary co-ordination across major infrastructure projects and global design teams.
  • Significant experience in area of expertise with experience in the relevant sector in a senior position
  • Excellent communication skills dealing with clients, suppliers, developers, consultants, elected representatives and the public
  • Client focused approach to service delivery
  • Ability to lead and inspire technical excellence
  • Proven track record in the delivery of specific engineering discipline with an innovative approach to solving client problems
  • Considerable professional experience and expertise in order to manage complex or non-standard scenarios.
  • Experience in the use of civil / structural software design packages
  • Previous experience in working with, Eurocodes, British Standards, Technical Specification for Interoperability, Railway Standards and knowledge of guidance available from industry research bodies such as CIRIA, Concrete Council etc
  • Experience of Prevention through Engineering Design including Designers responsibilities under CDM
  • Engineering design production utilising BIM
