SYSTRA are delivering the civil engineering designs for HS2 Lot N1 and N2 (Leamington Spa to Birmingham, Birmingham to WCML connection). These are some of the largest and most complex packages of civil engineering design across phase 1 of HS2. Having commenced in September 2017, scheme design is nearing completion and detailed design commences early 2019.

We are now seeking to strengthen our team with an external recruit in the position of Discipline Lead (Geotechnical and Earthworks). Based in our Birmingham office, reporting to the Engineering Director.

The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a range of practical work experience, project management and mentoring skills. Typical projects include geo-environmental site investigations, foundation design including piling, temporary works design, road design, works on soft ground and complex settlement analysis.

Main Duties

  • Ability to design and manage multi-disciplinary site investigations.
  • Interpretation of geotechnical data for input to designs.
  • Experienced in the successful delivery of geotechnical designs.
  • Ability to write GIR & GDR (interpretative reporting and design).
  • Skilled in managing project teams and controlling budgets.
  • Checking of designs and reports.
  • Collaboration with other IKM disciplines.
  • Ability to mentor staff in geotechnical software/programming, such as Holebase, LimitState: Geo, Settle 3D or equivalent.
  • Manage the team and expand our geotechnical workload
  • Client liaison


  • Previous experience in Geotechnical Engineering is required, with experience in the delivery of major infrastructure project.
  • Previous experience in managing technical project deliverables
  • Degree (or equivalent) in Geotechnical Engineering or related field
  • Chartered Engineer
  • Previous experience in Engineering/Rail/Construction project delivery
