Microsimulation Modeller - Senior/Principal

We have opportunities for talented microsimulation modellers at Senior and Principal Consultant grades to join SYSTRA’s Birmingham office.

The successful candidate will become a key member in the microsimulation team working on a variety of studies. These would include reviewing and giving modelling advice to support Highways England on the SPF contract, building models on behalf of Highways England or local authority clients, to transport modelling for private development control. The role will be as a modeller in a growing team, and will involve technical work, bid writing and training / overseeing junior members of the team. The successful candidate would be responsible for running projects and reporting to the microsimulation and business sector leads.

Day to day activities might include:

  • Reviewing a model built by a developer and advising Highways England on its accuracy and whether there is forecast to be a significant impact upon the Strategic Road Network;
  • Building a microsimulation model to predict where the SRN might have capacity constraints in the future, and developing mitigation measures;
  • Building ad-hoc microsimulation models on behalf of private developers to support planning applications;
  • Writing modelling reports;
  • Attending meetings with key clients;
  • Training, managing and supporting junior members of staff;
  • Managing projects – to budgets and deadlines;
  • Preparing fee proposals

To be successful in this role you will have experience in the following areas:

  • Paramics;
  • Matrix building;
  • Calibration and validation of models;
  • Excel – especially for analysis of traffic data and model outputs;
  • Report writing;
  • Traffic demand forecasting;
  • Model review / auditing;
  • Working in a team – delegating and mentoring;
  • Client interaction for project management and attending meetings.

The following skills / experience would be desirable:

  • Junction assessment packages such as LinSIG / Junctions9
  • VBA / Python programming skills
  • Experience in economic assessment

The successful candidate will also be able to demonstrate:

  • Degree level qualification in a related subject (e.g. Mathematical)
  • Excellent numeracy and analytical skills

  • Ability to innovate
  • High standard of written and verbal communication
